This guide is primarily for Brightspace (D2L) Administrators or whoever manages your institution's Brightspace (D2L) environment. If you don’t see the Admin options on your Brightspace (D2L) site, you'll want to contact your institution to request integration assistance.
A brief overview of the setup guide:
- Complete steps 1 - 3 below inside your D2L environment.
- Fill out the integration form provided by Yellowdig with your LTI 1.3 configuration details and wait for confirmation that your setup is completed.
LTI 1.3 Setup Steps
STEP 1: LTI 1.3 Tool Registration
On D2L (Brightspace), go to Settings (Gear Icon) -> Manage Extensibility -> LTI Advantage -> Register Tool. Select Standard Registration.
Fill in the form with the following details:
- Name: Yellowdig
- Description: Yellowdig Engage
- Domain: https://yellowdig.app
- Redirect URLs:
- OpenID Connect Login URL: https://api.yellowdig.app/lti3/auth
- Target Link URI: https://yellowdig.app
- Keyset URL: https://api.yellowdig.app/lti3/jwks
Extensions- select all
- Assignment and Grade Services
- Deep Linking
- Names and Role Provisioning Services.
Roles- select all:
- Send Institution Role
Register the Tool.
A box containing the details below will be presented to you. Copy these details and add them to your integration form. The next step (Step 2) in this guide produces a Deployment ID that you'll need to add as well.
- Client ID
- Keyset URL
- Oauth 2 Access Token
- OpenID Authentication Endpoint
- OAuth 2 Audience
- Issuer
STEP 2: Creating a New Deployment
Within the box containing details, click View Deployments then New Deployment to create a New Deployment. Within the Tool Dropdown, select the tool that was just registered. Fill in the rest of the form with the following details:
- Name: Yellowdig 1.3
- Description: Yellowdig Engage
Enable all Extensions and security settings except for "Anonymous".
"Auto Create Grade Items" should be left unchecked by default -- the Grade Item for Yellowdig is created at the course level when it is added to the course(s).
Also, check "Grade items will count towards final grade".
Select the Org Units that the Tool will be made available to, then Create Deployment.
Then send Yellowdig the Deployment ID in your integration request form.
STEP 3: Creating Links
From the Brightspace Deployment Details box, click View Links - New Link.
- Enter the name as "Yellowdig".
- Set Redirect URI:
https://api.yellowdig.app/lti3/unpack
- Change the Type dropdown to 'Basic Launch'
- Click the Save and Close button.
These newly created links can be used to insert links and assignments as Course Content into a Brightspace (D2L) course.
Add Yellowdig to the Course Navigation Menu (OPTIONAL)
To learn how to add a Link to Yellowdig in your Course Navbars, refer to the guide here from D2L, which details this process. Paraphrased, the process is to:
1) Edit the Navbar
2) click Add links
3) Click Create Custom Link
4) Fill out the required details. For the URL: Click Insert Quicklink > External Learning Tools and then select Yellowdig.
5) Once you've filled in all the details, click Create -> Save and Close.

What’s new with LTI 1.3?
We’re excited to support the new LTI 1.3 standard, which touts benefits in data privacy and security and a more seamless user experience with learning tools (You can read more here). The assignment and grade service features associated with LTI 1.3 will make grade passback easier to set up and configure. No more instructing students to click the assignment link to enable passback! Other functions related to course rosters in Yellowdig and setting up groups will be available soon, depending on your LMS and the update to LTI 1.3.
Does Yellowdig still fully support LTI 1.1?
Yes, Yellowdig still fully supports the LTI 1.1 standard. We understand that some schools and organizations haven't decided to transition to the new LTI 1.3 standard yet.
What is LTI?
Yellowdig uses LTI to integrate with Canvas. LTI is the standard in education for secure and seamless application integrations; it allows users to access Yellowdig directly from Canvas without the need to log in to another account, enables automatic passback of grades, and more (You can read more here).
Is Yellowdig IMS certified?
Yes, Yellowdig is IMS LTI 1.3 Certified for 1.3 basic as well as Assignment & Grade Services (See the certification here)
