Communities are spaces where conversations take place. Within Communities, learners share ideas, ask questions, debate issues, reflect on current events, share articles, and enjoy the repartee of authentic discussions. In course-related contexts, Communities as essentially extensions of online or offline classroom environments—places where great conversations continue and new conversations begin. Users can have one of three Roles with respect to a Community: Community Owner, Community Facilitator, or Community Member. Community Roles are related to Organization Roles, but they are not the same. (For more on Organization Roles, see the Organization Administration section of the Knowledge Base.)

Community Owner

The Community Owner is the primary manager of the Community. Community Owners can set up points, see users' Yellowdig grades, award or deduct points, create Topics, view Community analytics, invite or kick out Members and Facilitators, promote or demote Members and Facilitators, and change other Community settings. All Communities have one and only one Community Owner. Community ownership is transferable, but only by the Owner. In Communities associated with classes, the Community Owner is typically the lead instructor. In other Communities, the Community Owner might be a student, a dean of students, a coach, or a manager.

Community Facilitator

Community Facilitators have many of the same privileges as Community Owners. They can set up points, see users' Yellowdig grades, award or deduct points, create Topics, view Community analytics, invite or kick out Members and Facilitators, and promote or demote Members and Facilitators. Community Facilitators cannot demote Community Owners. In Communities associated with classes, Community Facilitators generally include teaching assistants and co-instructors. In other Communities, Community Facilitators might include students, faculty advisors, or administrative assistants.

Community Member

Community Members have the most restricted Community permissions. They cannot award or deduct points, see other users' Yellowdig grades, invite or kick out users, promote or demote users, or change Community settings. They can earn points, see their own points, and (along with Owners and Facilitators) post and comment within the Community.

To find Communities of which you're currently an Owner, Facilitator, or Member, select the Communities icon from the Main Menu located on the left and select the name of the community you wish to navigate to. Clicking on View all communities button takes you to the Communities page where you can enter a Community by clicking on the corresponding block. You can also search for your Communities; sort Communities by title, creation date, or recent activity; and create Communities (depending on your Organization Role).

You can only navigate to Communities in your current Organization or in Suborganizations of your current Organization. To enter Communities in different Organizations, you must first switch Organizations.
