Create a list of blocked words
How blocked words are evaluated
What Learners see
Blocked words allow instructors to prevent posts that contain specific language from being submitted in a community. While inappropriate language is uncommon, this feature provides instructors with added control and visibility when moderation is needed.
When a word is added to the blocked words list, students will be prevented from submitting posts that contain that word until it is removed from the body of the post.
Create a list of blocked words
- In the second-to-leftmost navigation panel, navigate to Management→Word Blocking.
- Under "Blocked Words", enter a list of words separated by commas.
- When you're done, click SUBMIT.
- Now, when a student attempts to create a post featuring the offending word(s), they will be notified that they've used a banned word (via a banner message at the top of the screen), and they will be prevented from submitting the post until the offending word(s) have been removed.
How blocked words are evaluated
-
Blocked words are evaluated as individual words, not as phrases.
- If you enter a phrase or multiple words separated by spaces (for example, you suck), the system will automatically evaluate each word individually.
-
All individual words within the entered text will be enforced separately, even though the interface continues to display the original phrase as entered.
Important notes:
-
Blocking a word does not block variations or derivatives of that word.
-
For example, blocking crap will not block bullcrap or crappy.
-
Each variation must be entered separately if it should be blocked.
-
-
Words are matched exactly and are not evaluated as word roots or partial matches.
What learners see
If a learner attempts to submit a post that contains one or more blocked words:
-
The post will not be submitted.
-
A message will appear near the submit button indicating that blocked words were detected.
-
The message will list the specific word(s) that must be removed before the post can be submitted.
Once all blocked words are removed from the post, the student will be able to submit successfully.
