The Recalculate Points feature allows instructors to apply updated point earning rules to all previous participation in a Yellowdig community. This is useful when point settings are modified after the community has already begun and you want existing posts, comments, reactions, and other activities to be scored using the new rules.
Important: Recalculating points permanently updates member point totals based on the current point settings. This action cannot be undone.
When to Use Recalculate Points
By default, any changes made to your community's Point Earning Rules only affect future participation.
If you want those new rules to also apply to activity that has already taken place, use the Recalculate Points feature.
Common scenarios include:
- Adjusting the number of points awarded for posts or comments.
- Changing points awarded for reactions, videos, or accolades.
- Enabling or disabling points for specific topics after the course has started.
- Correcting point settings that were configured incorrectly earlier in the course.
How to Access Recalculate Points
- From the left-hand navigation menu, select Settings.
- Select Point System.
- In the Point Earning Rules section, click Edit.
The Point Earning Rules determine how many points members receive for participating in your community. These values can be modified at any time.

After updating the point values, click the blue Save Changes button. Saving your changes updates the point rules for future participation only.
Apply the Changes to Past Participation
Below the Save Changes button, you will find the Apply current point settings to past section.
It contains the following alert:
Click the button below to calculate new point totals for members. This action applies the current point earning rules, including the current settings for point enabled/disabled topics, to all past participation in this community. This change cannot be undone.
To apply your updated point rules to all previous activity:
- Review your point settings carefully.
- Click the red Recalculate Points button.
Yellowdig will recalculate every member's point totals using the current point earning rules and the current point-enabled or point-disabled topic settings.
Important Considerations
- Recalculation affects all existing participation in the community.
- Current point earning rules replace the previous calculations for past activity.
- Current point-enabled and point-disabled topic settings are also applied.
- This action is permanent and cannot be reversed.
It is recommended that you review all point settings carefully before selecting Recalculate Points.
